Abstract:
In several issues of the Review, Defoe constructed the image of “Lady Credit” and integrated into the discussion of finance and credit markets in the early 18th century by British literati. By shaping the discourse of “Lady Credit”, Defoe analyzed the moral and economic connotations of credit, identified the risks of credit and the countermeasures of dealing with them at the individual and national levels. This classic creation of Defoe not only conveys the idea of credit that is still valuable today, but also reveals that the popularized and literary interpretation of policies and ideas is an effective way for scholars to speak out to the public.
