Abstract:
Marco Caracciolo, a researcher engaged in studies on cognitive narratology from Belgium, systematically explores the issue of narrative experientiality. As for narrative experientiality, Monika Fludernik's research on this subject provides important theoretical foundation for Caracciolo. However, Caracciolo claims that Fludernik oversimplifies the relationship between narrative and experience and equates experientiality with narrativity directly, which prevents her from fully revealing the essence of narrative experientiality. In the process of “discussing with” Fludernik, Caracciolo further examines the relationship between narrative and experience and redefines narrative experientiality based on the concepts of “background” and “impact”. According to Caracciolo, narrative experientiality can be seen as the impact stories have on their participants; the stronger the impact, the higher the narrative experientiality. In addition, the impact of the stories with higher narrative experientiality can restructure the experiential background of those who engage with them. Caracciolo's study on narrative experientiality is a successful attempt to re-explore the classical issue in narratology from a completely new perspective. This study not only enriches the theoretical connotation of narrative experientiality, but also provides instructive reference for current interdisciplinary narrative studies that are in full swing.
